We commemorate him this year with a special walking tour that traces his footsteps and explores his words, like: “My first afternoon, on reaching New Bedford, was spent in visiting the wharves and viewing the shipping.” A park ranger or National Park volunteer will guide you through Douglass’s first free hometown.
