DATMA hosts the next South Coast Walking Book Tour which features the book A Wind to Shake the World written by the late Everett Allen about the ’38 Hurricane. The book is out of print but is available throughout the Sails library network. There is no need to have read the book to enjoy the walk, but it is an incredibly engaging read.
We’ll use Allen’s book to provide some historical context for the hurricane barrier — the largest stone structure on the East Coast! We’ll also get a bird’s eye view of the massive and elegant sector gates at the mouth of the harbor. Andrew Cattano, the Barrier Engineer from the Army Corps of Engineers, will be joining us to delve into the barrier’s design, construction, maintenance and utility.
Join us on July 20 from 2 to 4 pm (rain date: July 21) It’s free but you must pre-register here at southcoastalmanac.com/walking-book-club/
