Descendants of Whaling Masters, Inc., was founded in 1974. There are more than 450 members of the Descendants of Whaling Masters in 30 states and overseas territories of the United States who treasure their connection with their whaling heritage. Membership categories are Descendant, Relative, Crew, Associate, Family and Contributing. Membership to DWM in the past was limited to persons who were direct descendants of whaling masters. However, under a newly established “Crew” category, anyone who can document that a relative served in any capacity on board a whaling vessel is eligible to join and encouraged to contact DWM. Persons interested in membership in Descendants of Whaling Masters and for more information about the organization should contact membership chairman, Chris Davis, P. O. Box 3026, New Bedford, MA 02741. Membership information is also available online at www.whalingmasters.org.

The whaling industry is a slice of Americana that may go unrecognized unless organizations such as the Descendants of Whaling Masters take steps to educate today’s public about this awe-inspiring and at times turbulent period of early life in America. The Descendants of Whaling Masters is committed to remembering and preserving our important legacy so that this thrilling history will not be lost to future generations.

Goals of DWM are to encourage members to preserve and keep safe their whaling artifacts and records; to work on projects which increase understanding of the whaling era’s many aspects; to inform young people of the significance of the whaling period and its impact on world economy; and to enjoy the sharing of common interests.
