Letter from the Mayor

As Mayor of New Bedford I welcome you to explore our vibrant city as a location for your next film project.

New Bedford is an historic seaport located on picturesque Buzzardís Bay, conveniently situated 60 minutes from Boston and 30 minutes from Providence. New Bedfordís rich history has endowed it with a wide range of landscapes, streetscapes, buildings and character for a variety of film genres.

Our unique city provides a wide array of visual opportunities: an active fishing port, scenic beaches, and large parks. Our diverse urban settings include commercial main streets, historic tree-lined neighborhoods, a Civil War-era military fort and industrial mill buildings.

Our historic downtown, with its cobblestone streets and authentic 19th and 20th century architecture, has served as the backdrop for films ranging from the 1950s Moby Dick starring Gregory Peck to a mid 19th century period seaport for the Walt Whitman segment of PBSís American Experience series filmed in 2007. The 2002 feature-length film, Passionada, also utilized various parts of our diverse city.

The Office of Tourism and Marketing is the point of contact for filming in New Bedford. The office has many resources available and is ready to assist with the following:

  • Coordination of Site Visits
  • Recruitment of production crew and extras
  • Expedited permitting
  • Accommodations
  • Contact information for related resources such as sound and light equipment, funding sources, machinery rental, media relations, and much more.
  • Catering

New Bedfordís diverse workforce including electricians, carpenters, caterers, tailors and casting directors makes hiring qualified professionals easy. The city also has a multitude of antique businesses and a regional salvage company highly experienced with providing a variety of unique, hard to find props and stage building materials.

New Bedford is film-friendly and film ready. We are experienced in working with location scouts and production companies. We understand the need for timely information and are accustomed to the specific requests that are the nature of the filming industry.

For confidential information or assistance, tailored to your specific project, please contact Dagny Ashley at 508-979-1745.

Sincerely,
Jon Mitchell
Mayor
