Join us for the opening reception for The Photography of John “Choo Choo” Ryan during AHA night Thursday November 11th 6:30 – 8:00 p.m.
John “Choo Choo” Ryan began photographing the New Bedford waterfront after retiring in 1988 from Amtrak. During his career as a locomotive engineer, he also worked as a diver on the waterfront, servicing commercial fishing vessels. From this work, Choo Choo came to appreciate the lines of the commercial fishing boats and began to capture the comings and goings of these vessels. Over the years, Mr. Ryan amassed a collection of photographs which documented nearly every boat sailing out of New Bedford during this period.
John R. Ryan passed away on March 7, 2009 after a long illness. The New Bedford Fishing Heritage Center is proud to be the caretaker of his collection of over 10,000 slides, prints, and negatives. This exhibit represents a small sampling of those images.
